Paul has a record of philosophical consistency unmatched in recent congressional history. He seeks to limit government at practically every turn. His refusal to compromise is legendary.” John Brady and Bob McAdam, The Wall Street Journal “This courageous and quiet Congressman has made a worldwide name for himself as the defender of liberty in this country… a persistent fighter for the reduction of the power of bureaucrats everywhere… and one politician who cannot be bought by special interests.” Maxwell Newton, New York Post “You’re working for the most honest man in Congress.” John McCain (to Kent Snyder), 1988 The phrase “honest politician” is an oxymoron; yet in the sense that Paul never, ever votes against his stated principles — which are libertarian and include the belief that much of our federal government, from the IRS to the

Rep. Petri and The National Direct Student Loan Coalition

On Sept. 21, several leading members of the The National Direct Student Loan Coalition (NDSLC) stopped by Rep. Tom Petri’s office to thank him for his work in defense of Direct Lending. Tom Butts, retired from the University of Michigan and now an advisor to the NDSLC, said Rep. Petri will be proud of his work on student loans for the rest of his career, and that his descendants will as well. The NDSLC is a grass roots organization of financial aid professionals. NDSLC believes that Direct Lending (DL) provides an excellent, streamlined process that allows students and parents to focus on education, not the administrative challenges that are endemic in the guaranteed loan system. The continuation of the DL program is vital to quality service for students and the efficient use of financial aid resources. NDSLC provides a conduit in Washington for those who want to ensure the continuation of the DL program. It is dedicated to improving the DL program to assure institutions have a choice in the delivery of federal loan funds to students and to assure continued improvement to all loan programs.

At a press conference Sept. 15, 2009 with Education Secretary Arne Duncan, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others, Rep. Petri discussed HR 3221, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009. This bill will eliminate the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program (aka “guaranteed loans”) in favor of the vastly more cost-effective Direct Loan program, which Petri has championed since 1983.
