Proposed legislation threatens to set back the accomplishments of non-profit student loan lender/guarantors like the Connecticut Student Loan Foundation. For over 40 years, CSLF has promoted access to higher education, helped families find financing for college, and assisted high school guidance professionals to shepherd first-generation and under-served populations into programs to help them discover and fulfill their dreams. Current media coverage has tended to lump together large lenders and banks with smaller, non-profit companies like CSLF. All companies providing student loans have the potential to serve well and provide good products, but small-scale operations like the Connecticut Student Loan Foundation have always realized the real dividends are service, satisfaction and connection. So here we are — and this is who we are: mothers, wives, husbands, musicians, writers, activists, bakers, readers and crafters. We live in your town, we’re standing in the same long line at the DMV, our kids sit next to each other in school and we all want the same thing: people who really care about our shared future. That’s the person who answers the phone when you call CSLF. Help save the Federal Family Education Loan program: go to our blog for more information and learn how can lend your voice to the fight for student choice and a solution that can work for us all. cslf.wordpress.com http “I am CSLF and I’m here to help you.” Also see www.keepstudentloanslocal.org
Previous debt has been paid; However, this an old video of me on the phone with Sally Mae. Now this lady was much more patient than all the other reps, while the last two just about hung up on me. After listening to this a couple times it sounds like I really did ruin her day from the tone of her voice near the end. However, I don’t care – These people are ruthless and they deserve someone like me to dish it right back in their faces.

www.consumerwarningnetwork.com College students struggling with overwhelming debt from student loans are getting support from some major players. Click here to watch the video and learn more. Reverend Jesse Jackson is using the power of his Rainbow Push Coalition to shine a light on the student loan debt problem. US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan was keynote speaker at his National Rainbow Push conference in Chicago. CWN contributor Attorney Nicole Mayer was also a speaker. Jackson and Duncan spoke about the need to make a college education affordable for all students. Mayer represents minority students in a class action lawsuit against Sallie Mae. The suit alleges the student lending giant charges minority students higher interest rates on their student loans. “Rainbow Push Coalition and Jesse Jackson have expressed support for the movement to end redlining of student loans and that is targeting students with higher priced loans simply because of the clor of their skin or the school they attend. And Reverend Jackson with his civil right background really appreciates the implications of this kind of practice, so to have his support, knowledge and understanding is critical,” Mayer said. Mayer also shared information about student loan redlining with NAACP President Ben Jealous and US from Illinois Senator Danny Davis.
I just transferred undergraduate schools and still have some student loans from my previous school (Sallie Mae and Federal Direct loans). Is there some sort of clearing house that my new enrollment status will be sent to so that the loan agencies know that I haven’t just stopped going to school (and thus cause my loan payments to become due)? Or must I obtain enrollment verification from my current school and send it to each loan agency myself?
Interest rates (Sallie Mae) will most likely be going up on July 1. I have received many, many offers in the mail to consolidate my school loans (these are similar to credit card offers). I do want to lock in at a fixed lower rate before rates increase. Currently, rates vary from 2.75% to 4.75%. What do I need to know to not get screwed? Are some companies more reputable than others? How would I find out? Are there hidden fees to be worried about? I graduate this June.
