Today I rise on behalf of the millions of Veterans who have returned home from Iraq and Afghanistan. From joblessness to homelessness, the readjustment to civilian life has been extremely difficult for our brave men and women. So it is our responsibility to do all we can to lighten their already heavy load. Today, my colleagues and I sent a letter to the Education and the Workforce Committee urging Chairman John Kline to address the aggressive and deceptive targeting of service members, Veterans, and their families by educational institutions, particularly for-profit career colleges. I’ve read reports of schools steering our Vets and their family members into expensive loans, rather than directing them to less expensive federal student loans. This is egregious and appalling and it must be stopped. Join me in calling for hearings and the movement of legislation. I yield back.

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report from voaspecialenglish.com | http Modern microfinance started with economist Muhammad Yunus. In the nineteen seventies, he started what became the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. He and the bank shared the Nobel Peace Prize in two thousand six for the idea of offering small loans to the poor to fight poverty. In twenty ten, reports of harmful micro lending methods and corruption shook the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Mr. Yunus recently said in the New York Times that things got out of control. David Roodman is with the Center for Global Development, a research group in Washington. He says microloans do not do a good job fighting poverty. He says over three billion dollars went into microcredit in twenty-ten. This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Imagine that you have lost your job. You could start a sewing business at home if you had a better sewing machine and a little money to advertise. But you cannot get a loan from a bank. In recent times, many people in similar situations have received loans from student microfinance groups. Such groups make small loans for business or personal use. Twelve of the organizations are part of a national network called the Campus Microfinance Alliance. The alliance provides financial aid, technical advice and training programs for its member groups. Each group has between ten and seventy volunteers, many of them college students. They have enabled hundreds of people across the United States to launch small businesses. Vanessa Carter is director of the alliance. She says bad economic times have sped the growth of the college microfinance movement. “This really got started because students were walking off campus, it was the height of the economic recession, and they were seeing boarded up businesses and the effects of high unemployment first hand.”In Iowa, a student microfinance group at Grinnell College helps people both locally and internationally.
